Job Summary and Responsibilities

Job Summary:

  1. Demonstrates an ability to effectively utilize the prescribed nursing process when providing direct patient care; implements nursing process in order to provide quality care based on assessed patient needs. Regularly updates knowledge of techniques and regulations appropriate to the ages of patients served.
  2. Performs a physical-psycho-social assessment on assigned patients utilizing all available sources of information (i.e., patient, family, medical record, etc.); accurately perceives patient problems and/or complications while incorporating patients perception of illness. Communicates clearly and tactfully with patients.
  3. Documents in a complete, clear and concise manner, the initial assessment on the Nurse Admission Assessment form and subsequent assessments in the nurses notes. Communicates data with other members of the health care team.
  4. Formulates an accurate individualized patient care plan, on assigned patients, patient's admission, based on nursing assessment and standards of care; care plan to include patient problem/need, expected outcome and nursing actions/measures. Regularly updates knowledge of techniques and regulations appropriate to the ages of patients served.
  5. Modifies nursing care plan as required by changing patient needs as determined by evaluation of care administered by self and others; evaluates effectiveness             of nursing intervention in achieving patient out-comes; continues patient assessment and documents evaluation in nurses notes. Regularly updates knowledge of techniques and regulations appropriate to the ages of patients served.
  6. Performs technical aspects of patient care according to established policies and procedures; utilizes proper techniques; adapts techniques to unique needs of individual patient; plans and coordinates patient treatment and activities on unit and with other departments to allow for optimal patient rest. Regularly updates knowledge of techniques and regulations appropriate to the ages of patients served.
  7. Administers medications with knowledge of action, mode of administration, side effects and contradictions; carefully               orders, prepares, administers, and evaluates medication and intravenous therapy. Regularly updates knowledge of techniques and regulations appropriate to the ages of patients served.
  8. Implements physicians orders after consulting appropriate sources regarding unfamiliar or questionable orders.
  9. Documents patient's response to and effectiveness to treatments medications and nursing interventions on the patients medical record according to established procedures as outlined in the unit policy and procedure manual.
  10. Communicates as needed with physicians regarding patient's responses and problems.
  11. Demonstrates an ability to competently provide individualized, goal directed nursing care to Endoscopy Unit patients, through use of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation from admission to discharge. Regularly updates knowledge of techniques and regulations appropriate to the ages of patients served.
  12. Participates in pre-operative patient education and explaining post-operative care routines, extraneous equipment, diet activities and self-care techniques. Regularly updates knowledge of techniques and regulations appropriate to the ages of patients served.
  13. Ensures safe transfer of patient from Endoscopy Unit to the patient care unit. Always reports patients condition to the Registered Nurse/Licensed Practical Nurse receiving the patient.
  14. Demonstrates an ability to accurately prepare supplies and equipment as needed for each procedure and with a maximum turnover time of thirty minutes.
  15. Maintains accurate and complete records and ensures appropriate reports and records are on a patients chart prior to discharge from the Endoscopy Unit.
  16. Demonstrates a complete knowledge of the location, care and operation of all Endoscopy Unit equipment; trouble shoots equipment as necessary.
  17. Interprets arrhythmias and provides intervention according to physician orders; anticipates arrhythmias and complications based on knowledge of pathophysiology and takes appropriate action
  18. Ensures delivery of excellent customer service resulting in positive and improving patient satisfaction scores for department and Medical Center.
  19. Makes appropriate in-house referrals, utilizing appropriate resources: peers, administrative director, physicians, and others for consultation on patient care problems.
  20. Maintains the dignity and confidentiality of the patient; serves as a patient advocate at all times.
  21. Develops a teaching/discharge plan for individual patients; identifies home health care needs or options for alternative placement and support resources; initiates procedures for referral to home health agencies in accordance with established hospital policies.
  22. Assumes the responsibility of the Charge Nurse position in the absence of the Director as assigned.
  23. Demonstrates the ability to effectively serve as District Leader on the unit as assigned.
  24. Demonstrates an ability to plan, supervise and instruct LPN's Nurses Aides/Technicians, Unit Secretaries; make appropriate staff assignments in accordance with the patient's needs and the personnel capabilities and qualifications; consistently supervises and evaluates their patient care rendered; assists staff as needed in patient care.
  25. Participates in the evaluation of newly-employed personnel and of unit personnel performing their assigned duties.
  26. Demonstrates knowledge of and rationale for safe use of equipment; reports any equipment malfunctions and orders service as necessary.
  27. Assists with orientation of staff members and serves as preceptor as requested by Director.
  28. Attends staff nurse and unit meetings and continuing education programs; attends all JCAHO required inservices annually.
  29. Maintains Quality Assurance standards for patient care.
  30. Demonstrates an ability to properly clean and disinfect Endoscopy Unit equipment according to hospital policies and procedures
  31. Demonstrates an ability to start IV's, administer medications and monitor automated equipment.
  32. Demonstrates complete familiarity with crash cart functions, medications and supplies; orders supplies to ensure proper amount on hand at all times.
  33. Demonstrates an ability to perform emergency resuscitation on both adult and pediatric patients, as required. Regularly updates knowledge of techniques and regulations appropriate to the ages of patients served.
  34. Demonstrates an ability to perform duties required of a staff nurse, Post Anesthesia Recovery, Operating Room and Same Day Surgery Nurse, in accordance with established procedures, as required.
  35. Participates in Endoscopy Unit Quality Assurance programs, as required.
  36. Performs other duties as assigned
  37. Works indoors in well lighted and ventilated rooms.
  38. Possibility of cuts and minor burns from instruments and equipment.
  39. Some direct exposure to contagion and fumes from chemicals,but risk is minimal when proper safety precautions are observed.
  40. Possibility of strains due to moving patients, equipment and instrumentation.
  41. Constant standing, walking. stooping, bending, stretching, lifting, pushing, turning and occasional sitting.
  42. Frequently lifts objects from 10 -150 lbs., frequently carries objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
  43. Frequently lifts with assistance, objects greater than 150 lbs. and pushes objects              up to 200 lbs.

Qualifications

Qualification:

  1. Graduate of an accredited school of nursing; current NJ Licensure, BLS, ACLS, PALS and IV Certification required.
  2. 5 years Endo RN experience required.
  3. Knowledge of function and ability to operate autoclaves and sterilizers.
  4. Knowledge of care and handling of instrumentation realizing that improper care and use are extremely costly.
